The fundamental question on Instagram, museums and all the rest

By 3 July 2019May 20th, 2020No Comments

The latest lucky strike from the boundless Mar Dixon is a project that is already proving a hit on Instagram and Twitter on a world scale.

It doesn’t really matter what the question is. It seems that this time the founder of MuseoMix Uk, Museum Camp and Teens in Museums has used her deep thinking to find a solution to a digital need facing many museums. The answer is 52! #52museums, to be precise: an Instagram account (echoed on Twitter) that will be run by a different museum every week from 4 January, throughout the whole of 2016. The museums will be asked to post images and videos of their spaces and collections, engaging web users, who will be asked to interact with comments and questions, as well as following the content.

While it’s true that the answer is 52, over 80 museums applied to take part. In order to keep them all happy, some of them have had to be twinned with one another, so that on certain weeks there will be two museums managing the @52museums account from different parts of the world, leading to guaranteed surprises.

Given an opportunity of the kind, we certainly couldn’t just sit back and watch. Here at BAM! we launched ourselves into the project, putting forward the Museo della Ceramica di Savona. We have seen this museum start life and grow over the years. What’s more, we look after its digital strategy. We’ve therefore ended up among The Getty InstituteMuseum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Barbican Center, Musée du Quai Branly and many more, just one of which is Italian: Massaciuccoli Romana, which is doing an excellent job on air this very week.

It will be our turn at the end of August, when the sun paints the Ligurian Rivieria gold and the Museo della Ceramica di Savona is packed with throngs of sun worshippers drunk on the sea. This is more or less what will also be happening at the Museu de Disseny in Barcelona, our partner in this adventure, which coincidentally is about to open an exhibition of its majolica collection.
