Design and development of communication and wayfinding systems for the museum complex

The Project

The Reggia di Caserta, commissioned from Luigi Vanvitelli by the Bourbon sovereigns between the mid-18th and mid-19th century, is a royal residence that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and has also been an Italian state museum with special autonomy since 2016.

The programme entitled “Completion of restoration and enhancement works on the Reggia and the monumental park” – funded through the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC) 2014–2020 – included a project to renew all the signage within the museum complex, with the aim of improving visitor reception and information services.

Why?

The national museum institution, one of the most visited in Italy, has decided to completely overhaul the communication system for the royal palace, the royal park, the English garden and the outer perimeter areas around Piazza Carlo Borbone and Corso Giannone. The project aims to update the visual appearance and content of all signage, in harmony with the architectural, decorative and landscape features, which are characterised by a great wealth and variety of materials, forms and colours.

The aim of the signage overhaul is to guide visitors more effectively and accessibly through the complex’s spaces and services, and to enhance their enjoyment of the cultural experience offered by the museum.

How?

On behalf of ETT Solutions, the contractor for the project, BAM! worked on the design and development of all the new informational, narrative and service signage, which was installed inside and outside the complex in 2025.

In defining the key elements of a new visual identity, BAM! has created an icon system, with a particular focus on the accessibility and comprehensibility of the content.

To make the educational and narrative texts easier to read, BAM! also developed infographic content and updated the maps of the complex, with the aim of helping visitors find their way around and locate the main points of interest.

It produced the following materials, among other things:

  • Information and communication towers
  • Multimedia information towers
  • Narrative panels, using images and infographics to describe the rooms and history of the Reggia
  • Information boards and signs
  • Wayfinding banners
  • Signage around the park
  • Panels containing maps and rules of conduct
  • Construction site signage
  • Barriers for crowd control
