Casa Piani is the section of Imola’s municipal library dedicated to children aged 0 to 14. In addition to library services, it hosts exhibitions, events and guided tours for schools.
The project stems from the need to replace the existing signage with a system that is consistent with the library’s image, capable of appealing to a young and diverse audience, with an inclusive tone and a strong focus on accessibility.
A new signage project for Imola library, designed for a young and diverse user group
The Project
Why?
The aim is to guide every visitor – whether an adult or a child – from the street to the service they are looking for in an intuitive, immediate and enjoyable way.
The library is visited by a diverse range of people, including those of different ages, backgrounds and language skills. It has therefore become necessary to improve accessibility, ensuring that the spaces are easy to navigate and welcoming even for those who do not speak Italian.
How?
BAM! has designed a signage system capable of breaking down linguistic and physical barriers. The project builds on and expands the visual language of the already recognisable Casa Piani logo, maintaining a lively and vibrant aesthetic suited to a young clientele.
Starting with the street-facing window, the space has been “dressed” with a clear sign identifying the venue, positioned at a height accessible to children and wheelchair users.
The text has been supplemented with universal pictograms, which are free from language barriers and can be understood regardless of age or cultural background, guiding visitors along the route via doors, walls and display panels.
Each floor has been assigned a colour from the corporate palette to distinguish between the different uses of the spaces. The same principle has been applied to the design of a large map at the entrance, intended to convey the library’s philosophy and the layout of the spaces clearly and immediately.
The exhibition design is the result of the long-standing partnership with In-Novo, which also helped to create bespoke displays such as information stands and lecterns that are fully in keeping with the brand.
