Strategic mentoring for the museum team to help develop a new open and participatory mediation system

The Project

Since 2022, the Museo della Ceramica di Savona – under the guidance of a new team – embarked on a transformation process involving various different areas: from communication to audience analysis, all the way through to an impact assessment for its various activities.
With the support of the Next Generation You call for proposals, promoted by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, the museum team is continuing its commitment to making the institution ever more inclusive and accessible, embracing the diverse voices of the community.

Why?

The museum staff recognised the importance of engaging with communities, listening to them and working alongside them to co-design tools and approaches to mediation that more effectively respond to their needs, whether for the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions or educational workshops.
After two years of collaboration in these areas, BAM! is returning to Savona to support a new phase: assessing the outcomes achieved in terms of public participation and engagement, and embarking on a thorough rethinking of cultural mediation practices.

How?

BAM! delivered a coaching programme for the museum staff, centred on audience development, active engagement and cultural co-design.

The programme combined training, dialogue and tailored support, with the aim of equipping staff with the skills and tools needed to design practical initiatives for shared cultural mediation. This approach places emphasis on building relationships with the museum’s audiences and communities, fostering openness, attentive listening, and a spirit of experimentation.
