The Digital Engagement Framework
Transforming digital complexity into clear, measurable pathways that help cultural organisations build authentic relationships with their audiences.
What is the Digital Engagement Framework?
The Digital Engagement Framework (DEF) is an open-source tool for strategic planning and guidance. It was developed in 2012 as an online toolkit by Jasper Visser, a strategist and change manager specialising in digital transformation, and Jim Richardson, founder of MuseumNext and an expert in cultural marketing. Since translating it into Italian in 2013, we have used the DEF to support cultural organisations.
Its structure is built around a 10-step approach: a guided process that encourages teams to reflect and plan collaboratively to develop a comprehensive and coherent digital strategy.
Using this method, we help organisations keep their audiences at the heart of the conversation and make decisions based on clearly defined objectives.
The DEF is structured to bring together the various stakeholders within an organisation around one table, facilitating dialogue. It creates a space in which vision can be translated into tangible actions that foster genuine and lasting engagement with people.
DEF and Audience Development
We incorporate the DEF in our Audience Development programmes, adopting a strategic and goal-oriented approach. This enables us to help organisations shift their focus from content delivery to relationship-building.
DEF and Communication
The DEF guides communication strategy step by step, making it possible to identify SMART objectives and resources, map target audiences, select communication channels and develop impactful content.
DEF and Digital Transformation
Building a digital presence that fosters new forms of engagement is undoubtedly a delicate process. Thanks to the DEF, every aspect of digital transformation can be managed in detail whilst remaining true to the organisation’s identity.
DEF and Accessibility
The DEF reframes accessibility from a technical requirement into a cornerstone of strategy, ensuring that language and media are designed to meet the genuine needs of diverse audiences.
The DEF is free for anyone to use. With our guidance, you can make the most of this tool’s potential.
