A new year of cinema at school. How has it gone?

The second edition of the project “A scuola di cinema”, coordinated by the Educational Department of the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and financed by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture’s National Cinema and Pictures for Schools Plan, is coming to an end.

Since the first edition, BAM! has supported the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna in monitoring and evaluating the project, collecting information on the progress of activities and the achievement of short-term results.

What has emerged?

As many as thirty-three schools were involved in this edition, located in six Italian regions. Around 350 teachers and more than 3,000 students took part in the activities!
This is what we found while supporting the project.

“A Scuola di cinema” succeeded in involving teachers with less experience of the subject and outside the established circles of Fondazione Cineteca relations. We observed a very noticeable impact on their film skills, and consequently a greater enthusiasm and confidence to continue teaching film in the classroom.

What emerges from the data monitored is the persistence of limitations and structural problems that still restrict the development of film education in schools, but the overall picture is much more positive than during the previous edition, indicating that change is underway.

The students always confirm great interest and enthusiasm for the project. They particularly appreciate the opportunity to carry out project or workshop activities in class, either independently or in collaboration with classmates. The project helped to increase other film-related knowledge among the pupils and had a considerable impact on the perception of audiovisual content: awareness increased with respect to the technical and narrative choices behind a film or TV series, but above all with respect to the professionalism and work involved in its production.
