Toolkit for Museum: a workshop for exploring museum professions

BAM! is back for the second year to open “Toolkit for museums”, a training and community-building course for sixty museum professionals, developed by the Fondazione Scuola dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali.

After last year’s positive experience at the Reggia di Caserta, the Fondazione once again tasked BAM! with structuring the first day of the Toolkit for museums project. A day dedicated to team building, but also with the aim of furthering the identikit and specific skills of the four museum professions involved: communicators, curators, registrars and those responsible for educational services and mediation.
A first step towards supporting and fostering an interdisciplinary working approach, to be followed during the course and taken back by participants to their own organisations.

This year we were in Naples, on 13 October at the new premises of the Gallerie D’Italia, proposing an updated workshop compared to last year, made up of connections, exchanges and hybridisations between museum functions.

The sixty course participants, from large and small museums all over Italy, worked with BAM! on constructing a real map of the four museum professions involved. Divided into working parties, the four groups of professionals combined the theoretical definitions of their profiles with their daily experience, uncovering the “hard” and “soft” skills needed to perform museum activities.

After this, having been remixed in small groups made up of representatives of each profession, participants were asked to reflect on the connections and hybridisations between their different roles, participating in a real “treasure hunt” for the skills needed to work together and breaking down departmental silos.
